Exhibition "Estonian sport in old photographs"

The opening will be accompanied by several attractions – artistic program, degustation, prizes drawing.

67 black and white photographs from the turn of 19 and 20 century show wrestlers, weightlifters, boxers nowadays considered to be pioneers of the Estonian sports. They are one of the most frequent themes in the presented pictures which emphasize how popular the disciplines were at that time among professionals as well as amateurs. Other photos show track and field, team sports, aquatics, artistic gymnastics, and the whole gamut of winter sports. The photographs are the unique example of beginnings of the contemporary sports – one of the most important social phenomena of the 20th century. The photographs come from the collection of the Estonian Museum of Sports and they were taken by professional photographers as well as by amateurs.

Dozens of languages – thousands of opportunities!

10^th anniversary of the EDL

As one of the organisers of the European Day of Languages 2011 the Embassy of Estonia is organising 3 demo lessons of the Estonian language for beginners, titled “Esimene tund”:

September 27, in the Centre for Foreign Language Teaching of the University of Warsaw, address: 26/28 Krakowskie Przedmieście, Warsaw, at 9.45 and 10.30,

September 28, in the Public Library of Praga Południe in Warsaw, address: 5 Meissnera Str., at 13.00.

The Embassy of Estonia is also organising the presentation titled “Welcome to Estonia – presentation of the country, culture and its inhabitants”:

This year, Europe celebrates its linguistic diversity for the 10^th time! The European Day of Languages, established by the Council of Europe in 2001, is a festival of linguistic diversity and an opportunity to demonstrate that language learning can be fun and a fascinating adventure. This year’s celebrations will take six days, and the programme will include language demo lessons, screenings of European movies, theatrical workshops, multicultural workshops for children, a city game for youngsters and special language lessons for people over 50. In short, the EDL will be a great adventure for everyone.

Language is the name of the game! Saturday, 24 September

Warsaw will once again become the area of a thrilling game. Teams of players will have to prove that they can communicate in almost any language, and have fun at the same time. The stakes are high – the winners will be awarded free language courses funded by several European culture institutes.

Kids in the land of multiculturalism Sunday, 25 September

Polish is not the only language spoken by young Warsawers: some of them also speak Vietnamese, African languages, Chechen and other tongues, and will be happy to share their multilingual skills with other kids during the workshops at the Warsaw Centre for Cultural Education (SCEK) in 4 Jezuicka Street. While children will be learning about the diversity of languages and cultures, their parents will be able to talks to experts about how they can best assist their children in language learning.

European languages on the big screen Sunday, 25 September – Thursday, 29 September

Film screenings at the Alchemia cinema and the Russian Centre for Science and Culture will offer everyone an opportunity to enjoy some of the most interesting recent European movies, in original language versions.

We speak the language of theatre Monday, 26 September

Teatr Ochoty will host multilingual theatrical workshops during which young would-be actors will learn from professionals about what it takes to act in a foreign language.

Later on the same day, children are welcome to enjoy Andersen’s Parade, a colourful show from Denmark.

Languages for all generations Tuesday, 27 September – Thursday, 29 September

This year, demo lessons for learners and workshops for teachers will be offered on three consecutive days in three different locations in Warsaw: the University of Warsaw, the Public Library in Praga Południe and the Przystanek Książka Public Library in Ochota, which will host a special programme for learners over 50.

The demo lessons will be an opportunity to learn your first words in a multitude of languages including Chinese, Arabic and Portuguese. The participants will also get a chance to find out if all Poles speak Czech, what the Italians talk about as they gesture, and which bands are most popular in the Russian music scene. During the workshops, teachers will find out how to teach foreign languages creatively and effectively. In between the lessons, participants will be able to visit info stands where a rich array of language courses and European language programmes on offer will be presented, and treat themselves to free promotional material.

Multilingual Europe Wednesday 28 September – Thursday, 29 September

The programme also includes an international conference with high-profile European experts on multilingualism, organised by the Ministry of National Education, the Foundation for the Development of the Education System, the European Commission Representation in Warsaw and the Centre for the Development of Education. The conference is one of the official events of the Polish EU Presidency.

Svjata Vatra ("holy fire" in Ukrainian) are an Estonian-Ukrainian "fire-folk" band. The band’s line-up is unique: the temperamental Ukrainian trombone together with the Estonian bagpipes produce amazing sound patterns, which generate fiery, non-Nordic and extremely masculine energy that cannot but impress everyone. Ruslan, the leader of the band, was graduated from the Ukrainian National Conservatoires as a trombone player. He has played five years in Ukrainian folk rock band Haydamaky. In 2005 he moved to Estonia and initiated with Estonian musicians band Svjata Vatra. Ruslan combines his very special charismatic trombone playing style with intense vocals and Georgian duduki, using scythe for rhythm.

Estonian duo "Opium Flirt" will perform in the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw

The Estonian Embassy has the pleasure to inform and encourage to participate in the event „Awakening of summer”. It is a joint cultural project of the European Institutes of Culture.

We are inviting to the open-air movie and music night during June 17/18 night, from 20.30 to 04.30!

The attractions will take place in the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, KINO.LAB cinema and in the park surrounding the Ujazdowski Castle.

In the programme: open-air movie shows, concerts, Dj sets, performance, everything completed by breakfast at sunrise, accompanied by the guitar music by Olivier Heim.

On 4 screens 27 feature and short films will be shown from 17 countries.

In the same time, 2 concerts will take place (Opium Flirt and Tres.b), 2 Dj sets (DJ Disco Partizanti i DJ PM Misha) and a performance by Kolektyw Otwarte Studium Improwizacji.

Opium Flirt is an Estonian duo, well-known from its perfect live concerts. They play a mix of electronic music and post-rock. To the standard guitar line they have added clarinet, flute, cello, piano, synthesizers and sampler. They draw inspiration from Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, John and Alice Coltrane. The concert of Opium Flirt will start at 00.15.

European Day of Languages in Warsaw

20-27 September 2010

Lessons and workshops in several European languages, a multilingual conference, art performances, a city game and a film festival will be the main attractions of this year’s European Day of Languages in Warsaw. The festival of multilingual Europe starts already on 20 September and will take the whole week!

The European Day of Languages was established by the Council of Europe in 2001. The official festival falls on 26 September and its aim is to promote foreign-language learning and the cultural heritage of Europe. The slogan of this year’s European Day of Languages, “Languages integrate”, refers to the celebrations of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and to the special communication needs of groups such as deaf people.

Europe’s languages on the big screen

During the EDL festival of films from different parts of Europe, movie fans will have an opportunity to get a taste of the original sound of languages such as Danish and Irish, but also to see the sign language on the big screen. The shows will take place at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and the State Ethnographic Museum, starting already on Monday, September 20.

Everyone interested will be able to take part in teacher workshops and demo lessons of foreign languages, including such exotic tongues as Japanese or Chinese. There will be nearly seventy lessons to choose from, including lessons of the sign language and of Polish as a foreign language. The first classes will take place on Friday, 24 September, at the Public Library in the South Praga District. More lessons are scheduled on Monday, 27 September, at the Centre for Foreign Language Teaching of the University of Warsaw. On the same day, the University campus will host young music, dance and theatre performers, including the Sonic Dance group, a Russian choir and children from the Polish-French La Fontaine school.

EDL visitors will also get an opportunity to find out about language study opportunities in Warsaw and European education programmes. Free promotional materials will be available from the info stands of the organisers.

Strangers in the big city

On Saturday, 25 September, language enthusiasts will try their luck in a city game organised in Warsaw’s Powiśle district. Their task will be to send a spaceship carrying a message about Europe’s cultural heritage to outer space. To accomplish this, they will have to demonstrate good knowledge of Europe’s languages and cultures. The winners will be offered a free semester of language study at a selected culture institute.

Experts take the floor

The main EDL events will take place at the University of Warsaw on 27 September. On that day, the old University Library in Krakowskie Przedmieście street will host the conference “Cross-culture communication: Languages integrate”. The event will feature an international group of distinguished multilingualism experts.

Virtual competition, real prizes

An online short film competition entitled “Summer and languages” is open for young movie makers equipped with mobile phones. The winners will receive attractive prizes including digital cameras and a free English exam.

Exhibition of Ilon Wikland’s illustrations in Kielce Toy Museum

Ilon Wikland was born on February, 5th 1930 in Tartu, Estonia. Ilon started school in Tallinn and then from 1939–1944 she attended the 1st Primary School in Haapsalu. In late September 1944, Ilon’s grandmother took her to the ship that was to take her, along with a school friend and her family, to Sweden. The war was drawing to an end and Russian soldiers started arriving in Haapsalu and across Estonia. Fearful of communism many people escaped from Estonia at that time.

It was in Sweden that Ilon met Astrid Lindgren, who liked her drawings and so their many years of collaboration began. The first book Wikland illustrated for Lindgren was "Mio, my Mio". But probably the best known are "Karlsson-on-the-roof", "The Six Bullerby Children", "Little Tjorven, the Boatswain and Moses", "Ronia the Robber’s Daughter" and "The Brothers Lionheart".
